These days, pretty much every elevator is an “Otis elevator” including the ones in the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building.
But the thing is — Otis did not invent the elevator!
Elisha Otis invited the breaking device that stops the elevators when cables snap.
Back then in 1800′s when the elevators just appeared – after a few deadly accidents – people were terrified to ride in one.
This hindered the construction of the new cities like New York. — The fear of elevators forced architects to build 4-5 story buildings at most. People just won’t ride in the elevators.

In 1853 Elisha Otis has invented an elevator safety device.
Given the level of distrust and paranoia toward the elevators he felt that the only way to convince frightened people that the elevators can be safe was to make a daring demonstration.
Otis would stage these spectacular shows where with a great pomp he’d climb onto the loaded platform of his elevator… take his tall heat off and shoot, “Cut the cables!” His assistant whacked the cable with a large axe and…
… gasping public would see the loaded elevator fall a few inches and stop dead. The passenger safe and sound.
The only words Otis had to say where:
“From now on you never have to worry about riding an elevator – as long as it’s an Otis elevator.”
The rest is history.
